A covert investigation designed to entrap God's Rescuer and Deliverer -- how twisted is that? Jesus deftly turns His opponents' clever trap into another teaching opportunity. And in the process He gives us clear instruction on one of society's hottest controversies.

Tensions continue to mount for Jesus. Chronologically, today's text is several days before His violent death. As we consider the attitudes of those who opposed him, we migt find some of the same in our own hearts. Let's reason together (Isaiah 1:18) and remember Jesus' warning: we should be careful how we listen (Luke 8:18).

One can tell a lot about a nation, its people, and its leaders by looking at its foundational ceremonies. Today's text is as close as Jesus came to a coronation during His early ministry. We learn much about Him, His nation, and us, too!

When The King Settles Accounts
Sunday Oct 11, 2015
Sunday Oct 11, 2015
In today's text Jesus, graciously correcting His disciples' misperceptions about Kingdom-timing, teaches us where we are right now, and what our resposibilities are. How then shall we live? Our King has made that clear. Let's reason together (Isaiah 1:18) and remember Jesus' warning: we should be careful how we listen (Luke 8:18). (We apologize for technical audio issues today.)

As Jesus approaches Jerusalem, Luke records two changed lives that summarize, if not symbolize, the rescue work of Jesus. There are rich lessons here for us as we think about what it means to follow the One who comes to seek and to save the lost.

What We Can Count On

In my opinion (perhaps worth: not much!) this text shows one of the most loving and compassionate aspects of Jesus revealed in all of Scripture. His concern for His disciples, demonstrated in what He communicates to them as they journey closer to Jerusalem, serves as a rich encouragement to us, two thousand years later.

Recognizing Real Riches

Our heart motives are sometimes hidden, mysterious, and difficult to identify with clarity and certainty. During His earthly ministry Jesus had a way of drilling down to the heart of any matter. The Spirit is still doing that work today. Are we willing? Open? Listening? Let's reason together (Isaiah 1:18) and remember Jesus' warning: we should be careful how we listen (Luke 8:18).

As Jesus draws nearer to Jerusalem, His call into His Kingdom and qualifications to enter become clearer. Today's text demonstrates two essential qualities, crucial for entering the Kingdom of God, and also important for living in His Kingdom.

Faithful Living

Jesus has noted the challenges of living in the Shadowlands between His Kingdom's assault on this rebel territory and its ultimate victory. This is where we live day-by-day: in the "already, but not yet." Such a life can be discouraging, and we can grow impatient. Today's text is a call to live full-of-faith.
