We are familiar with tragedy. In 2004, a tsunami killed more than 225,000 people in 11 countries. In 2008, an earthquake in China killed more than 70,000 people. Last month, a pilot intentionally crashed a commercial plane into the French Alps killing everyone on board. What would Jesus say about these tragedies?

In the middle of growing opposition Jesus' concern for His mission, those who were His own, and those who should have believed, seems to grow deeper and more intense. This morning we can learn lessons about our Lord, our times, and our urgent responsibilities. Let's reason together (Isaiah 1:18) and remember Jesus' warning: we should be careful how we listen (Luke 8:18)

Hope and an Empty Tomb

Spring flowers, colorful clothes, plenty of candy, and eggs to hide and hunt. Something about Springtime and Easter shouts out joy and hope. But we all know these days we're living in a pretty dark world. Is there any hope to be found? Is there something we can count on for assurance in the future? And can all that be a source for joy in our daily living?

Kingdom promises! Warnings about greed! Promises of provision! So much of Jesus' teaching over recent Sundays must be heard against through the background noise of increasing opposition. So it is with today's teachings: we had better be ready, but what does that look like? Let's reason together (Isaiah 1:18) and remember Jesus' warning: we should be careful how we listen (Luke 8:18).

At the end of Luke 11, Jesus is talking with the Scribes and Pharisees. Beginning in chapter 12, He is talking about them and their growing, deep opposition to His Father's rescue mission. In following Jesus we, too, will experience various levels of this very same opposition. How should we think about it? What should we do?

When Jesus Gets Angry
Sunday Mar 08, 2015

Today's text presents another unexpected picture of Jesus. What reads to us as a tense dinner party reveals important lessons into God's heart for truth and people. So, as always, there are lessons for us. Let's reason together (Isaiah 1:18) and remember Jesus' warning: we should be careful how we listen (Luke 8:18).

It's an odd paradox: often the more stresed and troubled our lives, the more prone we are to neglect the only source of real hope, truth, and eternal certainty. Psalms 119 asserts that God's Word is "a lamp unto our feet". In today's text Jesus affirms that truth and applies it to our daily lives.

One of the increasing realities of Jesus' face-set-to-Jerusalem journey was increasing opposition, culminating with His betrayal, arrest, trial, murder, and resurrection. In one sense, that's the whole story; but in another, the battles are quite unfinished. And that's where we come in!
